Wyoming Legislature considers bill on Flock surveillance cameras

The Wyoming Legislature’s Select Committee on Blockchain, Financial Technology and Digital Innovation Technology is currently developing a bill regarding Automatic License Plate Readers (ALPRs), commonly known as ‘Flock cameras.’

The debate centers on whether the state should ban the technology or implement stricter regulations. Critics, including Representative Daniel Singh, have raised concerns regarding Fourth Amendment protections, arguing that constant surveillance allows the government to build detailed profiles of innocent citizens' movements without sufficient constitutional safeguards.

Conversely, law enforcement agencies, such as the Cheyenne Police Department, maintain that these cameras are essential tools for solving crimes and provide objective evidence. While Florida has recently moved to ban these cameras from state highways, Wyoming lawmakers are weighing the balance between public safety and individual privacy rights.
