Wyoming Proposition 1 property tax exemption faces voter decision
Wyoming voters will decide the fate of Proposition 1 on November 3. The ballot initiative proposes a homeowner's property tax exemption that would exempt 50% of a primary residence's assessed value from taxation. The exemption would be limited to one property per person and would not apply to business or rental properties, nor would it cover the land surrounding a home.
Supporters, including Republican State Representative Ann Lucas, argue that rising property taxes are forcing residents out of their homes. Lucas noted that taxes on her own modest home in Cheyenne have increased by over 70 percent since 2019.
Opponents, including Governor Mark Gordon, warn that the measure could devastate the state. Concerns have been raised that the reduction in revenue would gut funding for essential public services, such as police and fire protection, as well as local schools, which receive approximately 70 percent of Wyoming's property tax revenue.
