Wyoming ranked top state for retirement in 2026 study

Wyoming has been ranked as the best state for retirement in WalletHub’s 2026 study, narrowly surpassing Florida. The ranking is based on an evaluation of 46 measures across affordability, quality of life, and health care.

A primary driver for Wyoming’s high ranking is its tax structure, which includes no state individual income tax, no estate tax, and no inheritance tax. These factors may help retirees preserve savings and assets. However, the study notes that while income taxes are absent, residents still face sales, property, and utility costs, and the state received lower marks for health care and challenging winter weather.

In a separate demographic trend, a survey indicates that 50% of Wyoming residents aged 18-35 intend to stay in or return to their hometowns to build careers. Key drivers for this trend include proximity to family, a lower cost of living compared to other Mountain West states, and opportunities in industries such as agriculture, tourism, and energy.
