Wyoming roads identified as dangerous due to conditions and traffic
Several major roads in Wyoming are identified as particularly dangerous or poorly maintained. Interstate 80 is frequently cited as the state’s worst-conditioned major road, specifically the stretch between Laramie and Wamsutter near Elk Mountain.
Other notable routes include Route 287 between Medicine Bow and the Laramie Mountains, which features steep hills and frequent wildlife crossings. Highway 59, running between Douglas and Gillette, is referred to as the ‘highway of death’ due to heavy industrial and oilfield truck traffic.
Teton Pass is noted for its steep grades and sharp curves, making winter travel ill-advised. Additionally, Highway 387 north of Midwest and Edgerton is highlighted as a difficult winter road due to its windy, twisting nature and high volume of fast-moving heavy trucks.
