Wyoming to require safety certification for large vehicles on Teton Pass

The Wyoming Department of Transportation has announced the WY22 SAFE PASS program, a new safety initiative for Teton Pass. Starting in October 2026, certain large vehicles will be required to complete a mountain safety self-certification to operate on the pass.

The program targets drivers of recreational vehicles (RVs), motorists towing trailers, and operators of vehicles with a gross vehicle weight rating (GVWR) exceeding 10,000 pounds. To comply, drivers must complete an online review covering critical mountain driving topics such as steep grades, brake fade, and load limits.

Once the certification is completed online, drivers will receive a letter valid for one year, after which they must reapply. Once the program is officially implemented, vehicles meeting the weight or type criteria will be restricted from using Teton Pass without a valid certificate.
