Wyoming Weiser Knoll Fire forces evacuations near Lander

The Weiser Knoll Fire is burning approximately 9,600 acres of Bureau of Land Management land southeast of Lander, Wyoming. The blaze, which has zero percent containment, was reportedly caused by a mechanical failure on a towed trailer wheel.

Fremont County Emergency Management has issued immediate evacuation orders for residents in the Twin Creek drainage area, specifically east of Highway 28 at Johnnie Lee’s Corner and south of US 287. Overnight winds shifted the fire from South Pass toward Twin Creek Road, creating significant columns of fire. Reported structure losses include an older barn and a Conex storage container.

Firefighting efforts include air support and federal resources, with Casper’s fire airtanker unit heavily involved. While smoke has significantly impacted visibility and air quality in the area, moisture is expected to move into the region later this week, potentially providing relief.
