X-energy to receive up to $1 billion for Texas reactor project

The U.S. Department of Energy (DOE) has notified X-energy that it will receive up to $1 billion in additional funding for its small modular reactor project in Seadrift, Texas. This funding is part of the DOE’s Advanced Reactor Demonstration Program (ARDP) and is intended to support the deployment of four Xe-100 reactors at Dow’s UCC Seadrift Operations facility.

This new grant follows an initial $1 billion award from 2021, bringing the total federal support for the collaboration between X-energy and Dow to approximately $2.15 billion. The funding operates under a 50/50 cost-share model, requiring X-energy and its partners to match every federal dollar with private investment to distribute financial risk.

In addition to the reactor project, X-energy reported several strategic developments, including long-term agreements for uranium enrichment services with Centrus Energy Corp. and General Matter, and an agreement with SGL Carbon to expand nuclear-grade graphite manufacturing. The company also received an $11 million economic development grant from Tennessee to support its TRISO-X fuel fabrication campus in Oak Ridge.
