X introduces controversial pointing hand UI to promote posts

X has implemented a new user interface element featuring a mysterious pointing hand graphic designed to nudge users toward the “promote” button. The graphic appears suddenly while users are composing new posts, leading to widespread confusion and irritation across the platform.

Some observers have speculated the design might be a seasonal prank related to Halloween, though the company has not issued an official statement. Critics have noted that the intrusive nature of the graphic could potentially deter advertisers and users who might otherwise be willing to pay for post promotion.

Dylan Abruscato, president of the TBPN podcast, described the tactic as “Nikita-coded,” referring to the aggressive growth strategies used by Nikita Bier, X’s former head of product who departed in August. This update follows the recent announcement that Peter Sellis, formerly of Snap and Discord, has taken over as X’s new product chief.
