X to disclose government content removal and account restriction requests

Elon Musk has announced a new transparency initiative for X, aimed at making government-mandated content restrictions visible to users. Under this policy, the platform will notify users when a government authority requests the removal of a post or the restriction of an account. These notifications will include the name of the specific government agency involved and, where available, the legal grounds or justification provided for the request.

This move coincides with X's efforts to increase transparency regarding its recommendation algorithms. The company has expanded its open-source code on GitHub, allowing for greater scrutiny of its ranking systems. This update includes a specific filter designed for Brazil's 2026 election, which removes posts from accounts reported to the country's Electoral Court from the 'For You' feed unless the user follows them.

While the initiative aims to distinguish between internal moderation and state-driven censorship, reports indicate that X has complied with between 83 per cent and 98.8 per cent of government takedown requests during Musk's ownership. In response to these changes, Indian government officials have stated that X must continue to follow the law of the land regardless of its new transparency protocols.
