x402 AI agent payment volume drops 93% this year

The x402 payment protocol, designed to allow AI agents to conduct transactions without human intervention, has seen a 93% decline in daily transaction volume this year. After reaching peaks of nearly $1 million per day in late 2024, recent seven-day averages have dropped to approximately $41,800.

Analysts suggest this decline reflects a gap between the rapid development of AI infrastructure and actual consumer usage, characterizing the current state as an early experimental phase rather than a long-term slump. Despite the drop in volume, infrastructure support is expanding. Cloudflare recently launched its ‘Monetization Gateway’ using x402 to automate payments for API and data usage. Additionally, Ripple has joined the x402 Foundation to promote open standards for machine-to-machine commerce, supporting the protocol through the XRP Ledger.
