Xabi Alonso discusses Real Madrid departure and Chelsea move
Chelsea manager Xabi Alonso has reflected on his premature departure from Real Madrid, stating that his tenure ended earlier than expected. In an interview with Sky Sports, Alonso noted that his exit occurred mid-season while the club was still competing in both La Liga and the Champions League.
Alonso, who took over Real Madrid following his success at Bayer Leverkusen, was dismissed in January 2026 following a loss in the Spanish Super Cup final. Despite the abrupt end to his project, he expressed no bitterness, describing the experience of coaching the club as unique and special.
Regarding his transition to Chelsea, Alonso explained that while he had no prior connection to the London club, he was drawn to its potential for long-term development. He emphasized that the timing felt right following his period of rest after leaving Madrid.
