xAI Colossus supercomputer expands in Memphis amid community concerns

Elon Musk’s xAI has established a massive supercomputing campus in Memphis, Tennessee, featuring the Colossus and Colossus II data centers. The facility houses a 100,000 GPU cluster designed to support advanced AI projects like Grok. Built in just 122 days, the supercluster utilizes Supermicro’s liquid-cooled AI racks and Nvidia HGX H100 platforms to manage the immense thermal loads required for high-speed processing.

While a technological milestone, the rapid expansion of such massive industrial operations has sparked local opposition. In Southwest Memphis, residents in historically Black neighborhoods have expressed concerns regarding the environmental and economic impact of the project. Key issues include rising electricity costs, increased water usage, the installation of new transmission lines, and the overall burden of industrial infrastructure on local communities.
