xAI faces expanded lawsuit over Grok's alleged role in generating CSAM

A federal lawsuit against Elon Musk-owned xAI has expanded as new plaintiffs join allegations that the company's Grok chatbot lacks sufficient safeguards to prevent the creation of child sexual abuse material (CSAM).

One new plaintiff, identified as Jane Doe 4, alleges her stepfather used Grok to generate more than 7,000 sexually explicit images and videos by manipulating a single childhood photograph of her from when she was 11 years old. The lawsuit claims xAI failed to implement adequate measures to stop the exploitation of its generative AI technology.

The legal action, which is seeking class-action status, has also named Stability AI, the creator of Stable Diffusion, as a second defendant. The case follows an initial March filing by three teenagers in Tennessee regarding similar allegations of AI-generated explicit imagery of minors.

Court documents further allege that X (formerly Twitter) provided only one tip to the National Center for Missing and Exploited Children (NCMEC) regarding Jane Doe 4's case and failed to cooperate with law enforcement requests for additional information.
