xAI faces lawsuit alleging Grok used child abuse material for training
A survivor of child sexual abuse has filed a lawsuit in a California federal court against Elon Musk’s AI company, xAI. The plaintiff, identified as Jane Doe 1, alleges that the company’s Grok chatbot was trained using real images and videos of her abuse from the early 2000s to develop its synthetic deepfake and 'nudify' capabilities.
The lawsuit claims that Grok has been used to generate new, abusive synthetic images of the survivor. The Canadian Centre for Child Protection reportedly confirmed that AI-generated material depicts the plaintiff. The legal action seeks to establish the case as a class action to represent other victims and requests a judicial injunction to prevent the production or processing of such material by Grok.
This follows previous controversies regarding Grok’s image-generation features. Research from the Center for Countering Digital Hate suggested the tool generated millions of sexualized images in a short period, including thousands appearing to depict children. While xAI implemented restrictions in early 2025, reports indicate these safeguards could be bypassed.
