A class action lawsuit has been filed in a California federal court against xAI, alleging that its Grok AI model was trained using child sexual abuse material (CSAM). The plaintiff, an anonymous survivor identified as Jane Doe 1, claims that xAI used real images and videos of her abuse from the early 2000s to develop Grok’s synthetic deepfake and “nudify” capabilities.

The lawsuit alleges that Grok has generated new, synthetic images depicting the plaintiff based on her original abuse material. The Canadian Centre for Child Protection reportedly identified that the AI-generated images depict the survivor. The complaint further asserts that xAI’s system treats public posts on the X platform as training data, potentially allowing abusive content to enter the training pipeline.

Additionally, the suit cites research from the Center for Countering Digital Hate, stating that Grok generated over 3 million sexualized images during an 11-day period, with at least 23,000 appearing to depict children. The plaintiff is seeking to have the case recognized as a class action to include other victims and is requesting a judicial injunction to prevent the production or processing of such material by Grok.
