Veracruz and Oaxaca face severe flooding and deaths from cold front

Cold front number 2 has caused significant flooding and fatalities across southern Veracruz and Oaxaca. Reports indicate at least 10 deaths in the region, including four women killed by a collapsing wall in Coatzacoalcos and six family members in Las Choapas who died from carbon monoxide poisoning while using a generator.

In Hueyapan de Ocampo, rising levels of the Hueyapan, Coyolito, and Cuitlazoyo rivers forced the evacuation of families in areas like Juan Díaz Covarrubias and El Sausal, where floodwaters exceeded one meter in height. Authorities have established multiple temporary shelters to provide food and medical assistance.

Emergency response efforts are being coordinated by the Mexican Army, Navy, and Civil Protection through the DN-III-E, Plan Marina, and Plan Tajín protocols. Due to the weather emergency, classes have been suspended in eight municipalities in southern Veracruz, including Catemaco, Las Choapas, and Uxpanapa.

Meteorologists warn that heavy rainfall of 75 to 150 millimeters is expected in central and southern Veracruz and northeastern Oaxaca. Additionally, a third cold front is approaching northwestern Mexico, while a low-pressure system in the Pacific is under surveillance for potential cyclonic development.
