Xalapa association reports rise in youth homelessness

The association Tepecoyo AC has reported an increase in the number of young men living on the streets in Xalapa. According to Xóchitl Mariela Ocais Vera, the organization's general director, approximately two to three young men arrive each week seeking food and assistance.

Ocais Vera expressed concern regarding the age of these individuals and noted that some face challenges related to alcohol and drug consumption. In response, Tepecoyo AC provides accompaniment and refers those with addiction issues to specialized groups for treatment.

Every Thursday, the association collects surplus fruits and vegetables from local merchants to distribute for free. This weekly initiative benefits roughly 200 people, including the homeless, elderly individuals, pregnant women without support networks, and migrants, such as a recent couple from Guatemala.
