Xalapa flooding causes two deaths and widespread damage in Veracruz

Torrential rains in Xalapa, Veracruz, have caused significant destruction, resulting in at least two deaths and widespread flooding across 26 neighborhoods. One fatality occurred in the Independencia neighborhood after a structure collapsed onto a home, killing a man and injuring his wife. A second victim, a 23-year-old woman, died after becoming trapped in a commercial establishment in the San Bruno area following the overflow of the Carneros River.

Local authorities reported 31 landslides and 64 inundations. The municipal government, led by Mayor Daniela Griego Ceballos, has coordinated with state officials to implement Plan Tajín, an emergency response protocol. Emergency shelters, including the Aldea Meced in the Juan de la Luz Enríquez neighborhood, have been opened to assist displaced residents.

In response to the damage, municipal departments are distributing food, cleaning supplies, and aid to affected families. Authorities have also suspended school activities in several municipalities due to the ongoing weather risks and have warned residents to avoid crossing flooded currents.
