Zacatlán pedestrian accident leaves 16 injured during local fair

A vehicle accident during the Gran Feria de la Manzana in Zacatlán, Puebla, resulted in at least 16 people being injured on August 12. A blue Chevrolet Cavalier entered the Andador Benito Juárez pedestrian zone, striking people at outdoor restaurant tables before crashing into a building pillar.

Authorities have detained the driver, identified as 74-year-old Silvestre “N”. While initial reports suggested intoxication, the State Prosecutor's Office stated that toxicology tests ruled out alcohol and drugs, suggesting the driver may have suffered a sudden medical emergency.

Of the 16 injured, 12 have been discharged, while four remain under medical observation. The victims included 14 visitors from locations such as Mexico City and Veracruz, and two local residents. The municipality of Zacatlán has assumed all hospital costs for the affected individuals.

In the wake of the incident, the Secretary of Tourism for Puebla announced a review of safety measures in tourist pedestrian zones. Additionally, the scheduled concert by El Bogueto was canceled due to logistical issues following the event.
