Veracruz launches Alcoholímetro checkpoints in Xalapa

The Veracruz State Public Security Secretariat announced that the Alcoholímetro traffic‑safety operation will resume in Xalapa on Friday 12 June. The protocol requires officers to introduce themselves without shaking hands, ask the driver “¿Ingirió usted alguna bebida alcohólica?” and administer a qualitative breath test. If the result is “No alcohol”, the driver is thanked and released. A “Sí alcohol” result leads to the driver being escorted to an ambulance for a quantitative test; the vehicle is stopped, documents and keys are secured, and the driver may be detained if the blood‑alcohol level exceeds 0. 41 g/l.

Medical staff conduct the definitive test; results up to 0.40 g/l are accepted, higher levels trigger an administrative fine of 100 UMA, vehicle impoundment, and a possible criminal charge under the Veracruz Penal Code. Officers must wear uniforms, official identification and video‑record the interaction, while the operation is monitored in real time from the C4 command center. The initiative aims to prevent and reduce alcohol‑related road accidents in the region.
