Xander Bogaerts narrowly misses cycle in Padres win over Rockies
San Diego Padres shortstop Xander Bogaerts narrowly missed hitting for the cycle during a 9-2 victory over the Colorado Rockies in Denver. Bogaerts recorded a home run, an RBI triple, and a ground-rule double early in the game, leaving him needing only a single to complete the feat.
Bogaerts struck out in his final two at-bats, including a strikeout looking in the sixth inning against Zach Agnos and a swinging strikeout in the ninth against Jordan Romano. He noted the difficulty of the achievement, stating, “This single is like a layup. Shows you how hard this game is.”
He is the first Padres player to fall just one hit short of a cycle since Tommy Medica in May 2014. The game took place at Coors Field, a venue that ties Fenway Park for the most cycles in Major League history.
