Xanthi commemorates liberation anniversary with military parade

Deputy Minister of National Defense Thanasis Davakis represented Prime Minister Kyriakos Mitsotakis in Xanthi on October 4, 2026, to commemorate the anniversary of the city's liberation. The ceremonies included a religious service at the Metropolitan Temple of Saint Demetrius, followed by a memorial service and wreath-laying at the city's Monument.

The event featured a military parade attended by various officials, including Members of Parliament, the Regional Governor of Eastern Macedonia and Thrace, the Mayor of Xanthi, and high-ranking military officers from the Hellenic Army General Staff and the Supreme Military Command of Thrace.

During the commemorations, Davakis stated that the entry of Greek troops into Xanthi on October 4, 1919, marked the definitive incorporation of the city into the Greek state, a process later ratified by the Treaty of Sèvres. He emphasized that through modern and strong armed forces, Greece sends a message of power, stability, and peace.
