Xavi excludes Memphis Depay from Netherlands squad

Netherlands national team coach Xavi Hernández has confirmed that he excluded Memphis Depay from the squad for upcoming UEFA Nations League matches against Germany, Serbia, and Greece. Xavi revealed he had a direct and frank conversation with the Corinthians striker regarding the decision, which he described as one of the most difficult since taking over the team.

Despite the omission, Xavi praised Depay’s maturity and professionalism during their discussion. The coach emphasized that the door remains open for the player, stating, “The door is not closed to Memphis, nor to any other player.” While Xavi declined to disclose the specific reasons for the exclusion, citing confidentiality, he noted that Depay understands the situation.

The two share a history from their time at Barcelona, where they worked together between 2021 and 2023. Depay currently plays for the Brazilian club Corinthians.
