Xavi faces scrutiny over Joey Veerman selection for Netherlands

Netherlands national team coach Xavi has faced mixed reactions following his decision to call up Borussia Dortmund midfielder Joey Veerman for the UEFA Nations League match against Germany.

Criticism has emerged from former professional Johan Derksen, who argued that Feyenoord captain Luciano Valente should have been selected instead, suggesting Veerman lacks the influence of the Feyenoord skipper. However, former international Rafael van der Vaart defended the choice, stating that Veerman’s playing style fits the team's needs and that he possesses a commanding presence on the pitch.

Analyst Ronald de Boer noted that while Veerman takes risks that can lead to ball loss, his style aligns with Xavi’s tactical preferences. Xavi himself praised Veerman’s performance, noting that the player had a “very good second half” during his return to the national squad.
