Xavier Atkins dismissed from Auburn football program

Auburn University linebacker Xavier Atkins is no longer with the football program. Following a suspension last week, the Tigers removed the standout junior from their online roster.

Atkins released a statement on social media expressing respect for the university and stating his intention to enter the transfer portal at the appropriate time. He noted that his current focus is on his health, his family, and completing the academic semester.

Atkins was a key defensive player for Auburn, having earned Second Team All-America honors after a breakout sophomore season in 2025. During his tenure, he led the SEC in tackles for loss and set an Auburn record for an inside linebacker. This season, he recorded 37 tackles, three sacks, and one interception through five games.

Auburn head coach Alex Golesh previously stated that details regarding Atkins' absence from recent games would be kept “in house.” With Atkins departing, the team is expected to rely more heavily on Bryce Deas, De’Marcus Riddick, and Elijah Melendez.
