Xavier Becerra adopts cautious platform in California governor race

Democrat Xavier Becerra, a frontrunner in the race for California governor, has introduced a platform featuring proposals such as accelerating homebuilding and providing free electricity.

Becerra has adopted a cautious campaign strategy, intentionally avoiding the specific, sweeping promises made by his political rivals. He attributed this approach to a lesson learned during his first term in Congress in 1993, when he voted for the North American Free Trade Agreement (NAFTA) based on assurances regarding labor protections that he later felt were not met.

As a result of this strategy, Becerra has provided vague responses on several key issues. For instance, while he aims to address the state’s housing crisis by speeding up construction, he has declined to commit to a specific number of homes to be built. He has also offered cautious stances on topics such as AI regulation.
