Xavier Becerra faces scrutiny in California gubernatorial race

Democratic gubernatorial candidate Xavier Becerra is facing criticism regarding his policy positions and campaign responses as the California election approaches. During a recent interview, Becerra drew ridicule for failing to take a definitive stance on the state’s housing crisis, specifically when asked whether he identifies as a YIMBY (Yes In My Backyard) or a NIMBY (Not In My Backyard) advocate.

Becerra also faced political attacks from Republican challenger Steve Hilton, who used a Halloween costume to mock Becerra’s openness to a potential mileage tax. Hilton’s campaign highlighted concerns over increased costs for motorists, contrasting Becerra’s proposals with the high fuel costs in California.

Additionally, Becerra’s interview responses have come under fire. When asked how he would differ from Governor Gavin Newsom, Becerra emphasized his fluency in Spanish and his personal background, which critics argued failed to provide substantive policy distinctions.
