Xavier Becerra leads in California gubernatorial poll

Democrat Xavier Becerra holds a 27-point lead over Republican Steve Hilton in the race for California governor, according to a new Inside California Politics/Emerson College poll. The survey of 1,000 likely voters shows Becerra at 60% support compared to Hilton's 33%, with 7% of respondents undecided.

Becerra, the former U.S. Secretary of Health and Human Services and former California Attorney General, has seen his momentum grow following the withdrawal of Representative Eric Swalwell from the primary race. The poll highlights Becerra's strength among independent voters, where he leads Hilton 46% to 36%.

During his campaign, Becerra has emphasized housing stability as a primary goal, stating his priority is to ensure no Californian loses their home. He has positioned his candidacy as a reflection of his working-class roots in Sacramento, contrasting his background with that of the current governor, Gavin Newsom.
