Xavier Becerra’s lead over Steve Hilton narrows in California poll
A new statewide poll shows Democratic gubernatorial candidate Xavier Becerra’s lead over Republican rival Steve Hilton narrowing to eight percentage points. According to a poll of 912 registered voters conducted by David Wolfson, Becerra holds 49.2% of the vote compared to Hilton’s 41%, with 9.8% of respondents undecided.
This result marks the first time Becerra has fallen below the 50% threshold in general-election polling. The findings contrast with a previous Berkeley poll that indicated an 18-point advantage for the Democrat.
During the campaign, Steve Hilton addressed attendees at the California Hispanic Chambers of Commerce Convention, proposing the abolition of the $800 small business registration fee and a reduction in regulatory burdens. Hilton also criticized Becerra for declining to participate in debates and for his previous record as HHS Secretary. The Becerra campaign did not respond to requests for comment regarding the polling data.
