Xavier Espot addresses UN General Assembly and EU agreement

During the 81st United Nations General Assembly, Andorran Head of Government Xavier Espot emphasized the necessity of respecting the UN Charter, international law, and international humanitarian law. He characterized the current global landscape as a “crisis of confidence” between states, institutions, and citizens, calling for reforms to ensure the UN reflects modern realities and promotes shared responsibility.

Espot also addressed the Association Agreement between Andorra and the European Union. He noted that while international partners view the agreement as a well-negotiated and asymmetric deal that benefits Andorra, there is a lack of understanding abroad regarding the reservations expressed by Andorran citizens. He attributed some domestic hesitation to political factions that blame European integration for broader societal issues.

Additionally, Espot highlighted the importance of small states cooperating to address global challenges such as climate change, international conflict, and the erosion of multilateralism. He planned to meet with leaders of other small European nations to coordinate common positions and increase their collective visibility on the international stage.
