Xayx̱lám Iyóqthet Indigenous Court moves to new location

The Chilliwack Indigenous Court has relocated and been renamed the Xayx̱lám Iyóqthet Indigenous Court. The facility has moved from the Chilliwack courthouse to Siyá:m Lálem, a space on the Qw’oqw’elith’a grounds owned by the Stó:lō Collective.

Designed to be larger and closer to First Nations communities, the new location aims to provide a more culturally appropriate environment for victims, Elders, and families. The move is intended to facilitate greater community participation in the justice process.

Indigenous Courts focus on restorative justice practices for individuals who identify as Indigenous and intend to plead guilty to criminal offences. Rather than conducting trials, these courts work with judges, lawyers, and community members to develop healing plans centered on rehabilitation and accountability.
