Xàbia to take direct control of municipal desalination plant

The Xàbia City Council has unanimously approved the reversion of the municipal desalination plant to direct management. The facility will now be operated by the public water company, AMJASA.

This decision aims to strengthen public control over an infrastructure deemed strategic for the municipality's water supply. The plant, which has been active since 2002, was originally built to address severe water shortages experienced in the 1990s. It remains a critical resource due to irregular rainfall, recurring droughts, and seasonal spikes in water consumption during the summer months.

In the same extraordinary plenary session, the council dismissed allegations presented by Acciona, the current manager of the plant. The council also approved the subrogation of all personnel assigned to the installation. Through AMJASA, the local government intends to improve operational efficiency and facilitate better planning for the maintenance, modernization, and improvement of the facilities.
