Xbox 25th Anniversary: Retrospective on Splinter Cell and Mass Effect

In a series of retrospectives marking the 25th anniversary of the Xbox platform, gaming journalist Ryan McCaffrey reflects on influential titles from the console's history.

McCaffrey highlights Ubisoft’s Splinter Cell Chaos Theory, noting that the 2005 release received a 9.9 out of 10 rating from Official Xbox Magazine, making it one of the highest-rated games for the original Xbox. He notes that the title was technically superior on the Xbox compared to other consoles of that era.

Additionally, the retrospective covers the impact of BioWare’s Mass Effect. Originally an Xbox 360 exclusive under a deal with Microsoft, the space opera RPG was highly anticipated for its use of the Unreal Engine 3 and its promise of narrative choices that would carry across a trilogy.
