Microsoft expands Xbox gamertag limit to 15 characters and adds cloud play during updates

Microsoft’s Xbox Insider program rolled out a new Alpha Skip‑Ahead update that expands the length of unique gamertags from 12 to 15 characters. The change applies only to unique, Latin‑script names; non‑unique or non‑Latin tags keep the 12‑character limit with a numerical suffix. As the Xbox team explained, “We’ve heard from players who wanted a little more flexibility when choosing a gamertag, and we’re bringing back support for unique gamertags up to 15 characters long.”

The update also introduces Game Hubs for Xbox 360 titles, letting players view achievement progress, screenshots and other details directly from the game card. Additionally, Xbox Game Pass subscribers can launch a game via cloud streaming while an update downloads in the background, eliminating the wait time. A new “Add to wishlist” button on game cards lets users bookmark both released and upcoming titles instantly. The rollout starts with the Alpha Skip‑Ahead ring, will expand to other Insider rings, and is slated for a broader release to all Xbox users under the bi‑weekly cadence announced by new Xbox CEO Asha Sharma.
