Microsoft launches Xbox Labs to explore AI and browser gaming

Microsoft has launched Xbox Labs, a new internal research and development division aimed at exploring emerging technologies to transform how video games are developed, distributed, and played. Led by Scott Van Vliet, the team consists of engineers, scientists, and game creators tasked with turning experimental ideas into tangible experiences.

A primary focus of the initiative is increasing accessibility through web browsers, utilizing technologies like WebAssembly and WebGPU. This move follows a trend of community-driven projects that successfully port games to unexpected hardware, such as running Windows PC builds on Apple Silicon or playing classic titles like Halo: Combat Evolved directly in a browser.

The division will also investigate the use of artificial intelligence, specifically through autonomous agents capable of automating coding, testing, and debugging workflows. Xbox CEO Asha Sharma noted that these technological shifts challenge traditional industry boundaries between software and hardware. The initiative is part of a broader strategy to reach one billion players daily by diversifying how users interact with the Xbox ecosystem, including PC, cloud, and mobile platforms.
