Xbox establishes XP division to expand franchises into film and live experiences

Microsoft has announced the creation of Xbox XP, a new division designed to expand its gaming franchises into broader entertainment sectors. The division aims to transform major intellectual properties into multimedia phenomena through four key investment areas: Xbox Pictures (film and television), Xbox Products (merchandise and licensing), Xbox Places (live events, theme parks, and immersive experiences), and Xbox Partnerships (brand collaborations and sponsorships).

This strategic move coincides with significant leadership changes. Kayleen Walters, formerly the president of Mojang, has been appointed President of the XP division. Following her transition, Maria Angelidou-Smith, previously of Meta and Reddit, will take over as the CEO of Mojang and Minecraft, effective October 19. Both Walters and Angelidou-Smith will report directly to Xbox head Asha Sharma.

The restructuring follows a period of organizational change within Xbox, which included the layoff of approximately 2,000 employees and a strategic re-evaluation of the Game Pass subscription model. The XP division seeks to formalize and centralize existing efforts to ensure that Xbox franchises can engage audiences beyond traditional gameplay.
