Xbox Project Helix to feature a family of devices and custom AMD hardware
Xbox CEO Asha Sharma has revealed that Microsoft’s next-generation hardware, codenamed Project Helix, will consist of a “family of devices” rather than a single console. This strategy suggests a multi-tier lineup similar to the current Xbox Series X and Series S models, aimed at providing various price points and performance levels. The upcoming hardware is expected to utilize custom AMD System on a Chip (SoC) technology and will support both Xbox and PC games.
During discussions at Gamescom 2026, Sharma addressed the future of physical media. While she did not confirm whether Project Helix devices will include optical disc drives, she acknowledged the importance of physical games to many players. To bridge the gap between physical and digital ecosystems, Microsoft is testing a “Disc to Digital” program with Xbox Insiders. This feature allows users to convert supported Xbox One and Xbox Series X discs into permanent digital licenses on their accounts.
Sharma emphasized that efficiency and affordability are key priorities for the next generation, especially as hardware component costs remain a challenge for the industry. Additionally, Sharma reaffirmed that major franchises like Halo remain central to the Xbox business strategy, despite shifting industry trends toward digital-only distribution.
