Xbox CTO explains cause of July service outage
Xbox CTO Scott Van Vliet has detailed the cause of the service outage that occurred between July 26 and July 27, which prevented players from accessing their game libraries, launching titles, and using physical discs.
The disruption was triggered by a faulty system update to a central licensing service responsible for home console sharing, Game Pass content, and certain PC scenarios. This initial failure was exacerbated by a bug within the Xbox client software, which caused a series of “cascading failures” during license verification checks. As a result, the ecosystem became unresponsive, affecting both digital and disc-based media.
Microsoft is implementing several corrective measures, including moving responsibility for the affected licensing service entirely to the Xbox team and developing more robust security mechanisms for future updates. A software update to fix the client bug began rolling out on August 10 and will become mandatory for all players by August 17. Engineering teams are also reviewing the technical infrastructure to identify further vulnerabilities and improve detection and containment of similar failures.
