Xbox denies sale rumors amid major restructuring
Xbox is undergoing a significant restructuring process under the leadership of Asha Sharma. This reorganization includes studio sales, project cancellations, and recent layoffs affecting hundreds of positions. While some studios like Undead Labs and Double Fine Productions have become independent, others face uncertain futures, such as Ninja Theory.
Despite rumors that Microsoft leadership might consider spinning off the gaming division, Asha Sharma has categorically denied that Xbox is for sale. She stated that the company will do whatever is necessary to create conditions for success, including analyzing partnerships and operating models.
Former Sony Interactive Entertainment head Shawn Layden has compared the current instability at Xbox to Sega’s situation in the early 2000s, describing it as the company’s ‘Dreamcast moment.’ He noted the difficulty Xbox faces in deciding whether to prioritize being a hardware platform with exclusive titles or a global publisher operating across all platforms.
