Xbox makes Gears of War: E-Day Xbox‑only, scrapping planned PS5 version

Microsoft’s Xbox division announced that the upcoming title Gears of War: E-Day will launch exclusively on Xbox consoles, ending any plans for a PlayStation 5 release. The decision surprised both fans and some Xbox employees, after earlier listings by retailers and a PEGI rating suggested a PS5 version was imminent.

The Coalition, the game’s developer, said it never discussed a PS5 version, with creative director Matt Searcy and brand director Nicole Fawcette both stating the game was never intended for Sony’s platform. Industry veteran Cliff Bleszinski praised the move, saying exclusive releases help preserve the Xbox brand’s identity.

The mixed messaging stemmed from a brief period when a trailer and age‑rating for PS5 appeared online, leading to confusion among retailers such as Walmart. Xbox officials later clarified that the exclusivity had been decided internally months before the public announcement.
