Xbox marks 25 years amid leadership and strategy debates
The Xbox brand is marking its 25th anniversary, reflecting on a legacy that began with its launch on November 15, 2001. While the original console sold approximately 24 million units and established key franchises like Halo, it faced significant competition from Sony and Nintendo.
Amid these celebrations, the brand faces internal scrutiny regarding its strategic direction. Xbox co-founder Seamus Blackley has criticized Microsoft’s recent leadership changes, specifically expressing concern over the appointment of Asha Sharma as president of gaming. Blackley suggested that the company’s heavy focus on artificial intelligence may lead to the neglect of traditional gaming priorities.
In a separate marketing initiative, Microsoft partnered with McDonald’s to highlight six of the brand’s most iconic franchises. The selection included Halo, Forza Horizon 6, Fallout 76, Candy Crush Saga, World of Warcraft, and Overwatch, a list that has drawn criticism from some observers for including titles more closely associated with mobile gaming or other platforms rather than core Xbox identity.
