Xcel Energy substation failure causes power outage in Cannon Falls

An equipment-related issue at a substation caused a major power outage in Cannon Falls, Minnesota, affecting approximately 2,388 Xcel Energy customers. The outage began shortly before 8:00 p.m. on Sunday night, impacting more than half of the town's population of roughly 4,200 people.

The highest concentration of outages was reported at a substation located north of the Lake Byllesby Dam, where over 1,200 customers were affected. An Xcel Energy spokesperson noted that while the equipment issue produced a loud noise that may have concerned residents, it was not considered a threat to public safety. Crews were working to restore service, with an estimated restoration time of 1:00 p.m. on Monday.
