Xi and Trump summit extends trade truce to 2027

The recent summit between Xi Jinping and Donald Trump yielded limited breakthroughs, though both leaders utilized the meeting to bolster domestic political standing. In economic terms, the two nations agreed to extend the trade war truce for two months, pushing the deadline to January 10, 2027. As a gesture of goodwill, China committed to importing at least 10 million tons of coal from the United States annually for the next two years.

Significant disagreements persist regarding artificial intelligence regulation. President Xi emphasized the need for international cooperation and human control over autonomous systems to prevent technology hegemony. Conversely, Trump viewed AI as a critical race the United States cannot afford to lose, expressing opposition to administrative regulations that might hinder research and development. Trump even suggested renaming AI to ‘Super Intelligence’ to project greater strategic dominance.

Other critical issues, including high-tech containment and Iran, remained without substantive resolution during the meeting.
