Xi Jinping addresses economic and Taiwan tensions in talks with Trump

Chinese President Xi Jinping met with Donald Trump amid significant domestic and geopolitical challenges. While China continues to see record global exports, its internal economy faces instability characterized by high youth unemployment and a collapse in property prices.

During discussions, Xi emphasized the importance of protecting Chinese exports from debilitating U.S. tariffs. On the issue of Taiwan, Xi reiterated that U.S. arms sales to the island represent a red line for China, warning that mismanagement of the situation could lead to conflict. While Trump has previously described arms packages for Taiwan as a potential bargaining chip, he has not yet issued a public response to Xi’s recent calls for the United States to maintain a “correct position” regarding Taiwan’s independence.
