Xi Jinping and China resist U.S. trade pressures

Chinese President Xi Jinping emerged as a primary figure in resisting U.S. economic policies. Following the launch of the U.S. 'Liberation Day' initiative in April 2025, which aimed to impose tariffs on over a hundred countries, China responded with reciprocal tariffs. This escalation eventually led to negotiations to prevent significant damage to the American economy.

Further tension arose when China implemented strict export controls on rare earth elements, which are critical to the U.S. technology industry. This move forced the White House to suspend several of its own controls on China.
