Xi Jinping announces two pandas heading to Atlanta Zoo
During a state visit to the White House, Chinese President Xi Jinping announced that two giant pandas, Ping Ping and Fu Shuang, will arrive at Zoo Atlanta in the coming days. This move marks a new ten-year international conservation and research cooperation agreement between China and the United States.
The two pandas, both born in 2020 at the Chengdu Research Base of Giant Panda Breeding, were selected based on age, health, genetics, and temperament. To prepare for their arrival, Zoo Atlanta has invested $6 million in facility upgrades and equipment to ensure an optimal habitat.
This gesture is viewed as a significant act of “panda diplomacy,” serving as a symbol of friendship between the two nations. It follows a period of reduced panda presence in the U.S. after previous pandas returned to China in 2024. The arrival of Ping Ping and Fu Shuang is expected to revitalize long-standing conservation ties and scientific collaboration in disease prevention and biodiversity protection.
