Xi Jinping maintains power through military control 50 years after Mao Zedong

Fifty years after the death of Mao Zedong, the principle that political power in China stems from control of the People's Liberation Army (PLA) remains a central tenet for the Chinese Communist Party. Current leader Xi Jinping has reinforced this principle by consolidating authority through the Central Military Commission and implementing a system where the military is directly responsible to the Chairman.

Xi has conducted extensive anti-corruption campaigns within the military, leading to the removal of high-ranking officials and several members of the Central Military Commission. While some observers suggest these purges could disrupt command structures and combat effectiveness, others note that Xi currently maintains a level of military control that exceeds that of his predecessors.

Looking toward the 100th anniversary of the PLA in 2027, China is reportedly making preparations to achieve the goal of unifying with Taiwan through military force. This includes legislative updates to mobilize expertise in artificial intelligence and drones, as well as long-term planning for food and energy security.
