Xi Jinping proposes new Middle East security framework during Egypt visit
During a state visit to Cairo on September 2, 2026, Chinese President Xi Jinping and Egyptian President Abdel Fattah El-Sisi discussed a new framework for regional stability in the Middle East. Xi proposed a four-point security architecture designed to promote common security through four specific principles: unleashing internal drivers, advancing an integrated approach, cementing a development foundation, and enhancing international coordination.
The proposal aims to encourage Middle Eastern nations to pursue greater strategic autonomy rather than relying heavily on external powers. Analysts suggest that increased coordination between China and Egypt could provide a path toward stability in a region where crises in areas like Gaza, the Red Sea, and Sudan increasingly overlap through trade, energy, and migration.
President El-Sisi reaffirmed Egypt’s commitment to the one-China principle and the advancement of the Egypt-China comprehensive strategic partnership, marking the 70th anniversary of diplomatic ties between the two nations. The security of the region is of particular economic importance to both nations, given the role of the Suez Canal in global maritime trade and China’s reliance on secure supply chains.
