Chinese President Xi Jinping is expected to pressure U.S. President Donald Trump to halt arms sales to Taiwan during their upcoming summit in Washington. Beijing maintains that Taiwan is part of its territory and has consistently opposed U.S. military support for the island.

Currently, a pending arms package for Taiwan valued at approximately $14 billion remains unapproved by the Trump administration. This follows a previous $11 billion package approved in December. Trump has previously characterized the pending deal as a 'very good bargaining chip' following a meeting with Xi in May.

In response, Taiwan's Ministry of National Defense stated it will maintain close communication with the U.S. to ensure the planned sales proceed. Taiwanese President Lai Ching-te has also signaled a commitment to increasing domestic defense spending, including the development of submarines, fighter jets, and long-range missiles.
