Xi Jinping's September Washington Visit Preparations Accelerate Amid Strategic Differences
U.S. Secretary of State Marco Rubio said a lengthy meeting with Chinese Foreign Minister Wang Yi was aimed at laying the groundwork for President Xi Jinping’s planned visit to Washington in September. Both sides acknowledged large strategic disagreements but stressed the importance of keeping dialogue open.
Rubio added that officials will pinpoint areas where cooperation is possible before the summit, targeting concrete outcomes in trade, investment and other issues. While the United States has previously accused China of interfering in the 2020 election, Rubio said that topic was not addressed. He also noted ongoing U.S. navigation operations and commitments to regional allies such as the Philippines, highlighting the broader security context surrounding the talks.
