Xiaomi and Samsung compete in budget smartphone market

The entry-level smartphone market is seeing intense competition between the Xiaomi Redmi Note 15 and the Samsung Galaxy A17 5G. The Xiaomi model features an AMOLED panel with a 120 Hz refresh rate, while the Pro+ version offers a peak brightness of 1800 nits and a density of 447 ppi. In contrast, the Samsung Galaxy A17 5G utilizes a Super AMOLED screen with a 90 Hz refresh rate and a peak brightness of 800 nits. Under the hood, the Samsung device is equipped with an Exynos 1330 processor and 4 GB of RAM.

This competition occurs amidst a challenging period for the mobile industry. Inflation and a memory chip crisis have impacted manufacturer margins, leading to rising prices and the disappearance of the traditional ‘bargain’ smartphone. The mid-range market has split into two distinct segments: highly economical devices that reuse older components and more premium-leaning models priced between 500 and 600 euros.
